Craig M. Maxfield

Beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend;

Craig M. Maxfield, 23, of Lowell, a member of a widely known Lowell family, died unexpectedly Saturday morning August 11, 2018 in Lowell.

He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, June 30, 1995, a loving son of Brian J. and Carole L. (Keaney) Maxfield.

Craig attended the Immaculate Conception Grammar school and was a graduate of Lowell Catholic High School in the Class of 2013. He went on to graduate from Merrimack College in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance.

Craig worked as a Compensation Specialist at Commonwealth Financial in Waltham.

A dedicated athlete, Craig loved all sports, especially baseball, hockey and golf. While at Lowell Catholic High School, he was the starting shortstop on the 2013 State Championship baseball team and was also awarded the 7th Player award from the Varsity hockey team. His love for street hockey took him on many family trips, including Niagara Falls. Craig was active in intramural sports at Merrimack and was a Junior Member of Long Meadow Golf Club.

Craig had an infectious smile and contagious energy, which endeared him to everyone he met. He was deeply caring and compassionate. His wit was forever present and was a testament to the connection he had to those he loved. Craig will be missed by his devoted best friend Max McCabe along with dozens of friends through his sports and school. He will be especially missed by his “brothers” from Belvidere and Merrimack College.

Besides his parents Brian and Carole, Craig is survived by his younger brother Eric J. Maxfield of Lowell; his maternal grandmother Marjorie Keaney of Lowell; his paternal step grandmother Theresa Maxfield of Leominster; three aunts Patricia Bergin of Woburn, Lisa Contreras of Leominster and Lynne Boyce of Fitchburg; several cousins and his girlfriend Olivia Boudreau.

The family wishes to extend thanks to the amazing outpouring of love and support from relatives, friends and the community. We would especially like to thank the Lowell Police for their commitment to our family.

Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass to be celebrated Saturday morning at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH at 10 o’clock followed by burial St. Mary Cemetery in Tewksbury. Dear Maxfield family, I attended Merrimack with Craig and we worked together through the Intramurals department. I want you to know how wonderful we all thought he was. Craig always had a smile on this face. He was a hard worker and amazing energy to be around. I’ll never forget, we had a team bonding trip one year at a roller palace/arcade place. Craig won an absurd amount of tickets. He was laughing and so pleased with himself. Watching the little kids walk by and wondering how he got so many was great to watch. As we’re about to leave, Craig decides he HAS to have this big inflatable exercise ball. The ball was so big he could barely fit it into the van to get it home. I’ll never forget the laughs our car shared over that. He truly was a great human being and will forever be missed and remembered. I hope God lights the way for you during this time. I hope you find compassion and are kind to yourselves during the healing process. Be proud of who Craig was and will continue to be in his afterlife. Thank you for raising such a kind hearted, all around great guy. I feel blessed I was able to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    Dear Carole and Brian - We are all saddened for your loss. You are wonderful parents and Craig’s many achievements were, I’m sure, due in part to your fierce love and tireless devotion to him. I pray for Eric’s and your strength and courage; and in time peacefulness in the knowledge that you’ll all see Craig again one day. With love and May God Bless you all - The Breens - Kathy, Jack, Quinn and Juliah

    Brian & Carole, My heart and thoughts are with you. No words can comfort, although we attempt. Your loss seems so wrong, for that I offer a hand of friendship should you need one. The love you have for Craig and the support you provided as parents is abundantly evident. Your pride in his accomplishments is not diminished by his physical departure from this world. As you and your huge tribe of family and friends gather to celebrate Craig's life cherish every brutal/beautiful moment. I will be with you in spirit and lifting you in thought and prayer. May love surround you and sustain you.

  • Jenna Coviello  - Deepest condolences
    To the Maxfield family, Though I didn’t know Craig well, I did get to work with him during my time reffing intramurals at Merrimack. Craig was always quiet and kept to himself for the most part, but was also incredibly kind and helpful. I really enjoyed working with him for the length of time that I did. I ended up seeing him out one night in Boston after we graduated. Because we didn’t know each other well I figured that perhaps he wouldn’t even come up to say hello. But he came right up to me, gave me a big hug, and asked what I was up to since graduation. It meant so much to me to have him so genuinely care about how I was doing and what my life looked like post-Merrimack. Not everyone would do that, but Craig did. I wish that I had had the opportunity to know him more while we were in undergrad, because even from that one interaction post-grad, I could tell he was a great person. I send you my deepest condolences, and know that that the loss of Craig is a loss for the entire Merrimack community and especially to the class of 2017. May you find peace during this difficult time, and know that Craig was very loved and will be terribly missed.
  • Brian  - In my thoughts
    Dear Carole, Brian & Eric, I know the words "I'm sorry for your loss" can seem so arbitrary during a time like this, but please just know how many people love your family and love Craig. You haven't stopped being in my thoughts since the day I heard about Craig's passing. I never had the chance to meet Craig but it's clear to see just how many lives he touched - and that's a testament to your family. His life may have been abruptly cut short, but his legacy and his impact will linger forever in you and in the lives of everyone who knew him.
  • John B Keaney  - dear cousin Carol and Brian

Right now I and I'm crying like a baby I can barely speak. I can't begin to say how sorry I have for you and your family, our family. Love your cousin John 60UgY
