Muriel F. Haggerty
a beloved lifelong resident of Lowell;

Muriel F. (Shanahan) Haggerty, 98, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 17, 2022 at the Palm Center in Chelmsford.

She was the wife of the late Philip J. Haggerty and resided in Lowell her entire life until moving to the Bayberry Assisted Living community in Tewksbury in 2016.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on July 9, 1924, the daughter of the late Edward F. and the late Mary F. (Fitzgerald) Shanahan, she was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception parish of Lowell and a former communicant of St. Patrick’s parish until she married Philip in 1950.

A proud graduate of St. Patrick’s Girl’s High School in Lowell, the entire class of sixteen with whom she graduated from St. Patrick’s with were all lifelong friends and Muriel shared many fond and cherished memories of their fun times together. She also attended Lowell Commercial College.

While raising her children, Muriel worked part-time as a clerk for the Lowell School System. Later in life, she retired after many years working for Mass Opticians in Lowell.

She will be fondly remembered for her strength of character and zeal for life, long into her 90’s. She and Phil enjoyed many years ballroom dancing with friends.

Muriel loved to sing to her family, meet with old and new friends, follow all the NE sports teams (especially the Red Sox) and swam in the ocean into her early 90’s. Muriel enjoyed playing cribbage and read the Lowell Sun newspaper every day. But her very favorite activity was to talk proudly of her beloved granddaughter, Molly.

Surviving Muriel are her two daughters, Mary Jo Sudol and her husband Stephen A. Sudol of Dracut and and Susan F. Jones and her husband John L. Jones of East Aurora, NY; her beloved granddaughter Molly B. of East Aurora, NY; and her sister H. Ursula Shanahan of Lowell. Muriel also had many loving friends of all ages who were like family to her.

She was also the sister of the late Edward F. Shanahan.

  • Eileen Sharkey  - So sorry to hear this
    I am so sorry to hear about Mrs. Haggerty’s passing. The world was a better place because she was in it. She used to talk to us kids as if we were adults and listened as if what we said was as important as anything an adult would say. And she was so kind.
