Retired Washington School Principal; proud WW II Veteran
Edward S. Byrne, 87, a longtime resident of Tyngsboro, MA and York Beach, ME, but formerly of Lowell, MA, died Friday evening June 12, 2015, at his home in Tyngsboro surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was the beloved husband of Ann Marie (Daley) Byrne with whom he would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on August 10th of this year.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, December 4, 1927, the son of Charles and Mary (Charles) Byrne, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School (1945).
Ed entered the US Navy during his senior year at LHS. Without his knowledge, he enrolled in the service on the same day his brother Thomas H. Byrne’s ship was attacked during the battle of Ormoc Bay, Phillipines. Edward later attended reunions of the USS Cooper and had a lifelong interest in that battle in honor of his brother.
Following the war, he graduated from Lowell State Teacher’s College (1952) and went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Education from Fitchburg State College (1958).
Ed spent most of his teaching career at the Washington School in Lowell. He was a supervising teacher and became Principal for 26 years. He was most proud of bringing the school into the modern age by updating the facility and curriculum after the WW II years.
He trained as a plumber in his youth and was talented in all areas of construction. He insisted on doing his own work and used his skills to renovate his homes.
In retirement, he enjoyed his summer home over-looking the Nubble Lighthouse in York Beach for the past 22 years and enjoyed the company of his family, neighbors and friends.
A member of the American Legion Post 247 in Tyngsboro and the Lowell Lodge of Elks, # 87, he was also a Life Member of the Tyngsboro Sportsman Club.
Ed Byrne enjoyed a full and purposeful life. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, long-time educator and family patriarch. Later in life, he became a mentor to his nephews after the death of his brother, Emmett and cared for his sister, Irene, through a lengthy illness.
He is survived by two daughters Anabel Milinazzo and her husband James of Lowell and Mary Frances Carroll of Dunstable; a son E. Stephen Byrne and wife Vinnie-Jean of Pelham, NH; 6 grandchildren Julie (Milinazzo) Durkin and husband Brian of Lowell, Taylor (Carroll) Singh and husband Jeremy of Lexington, MA, Joseph Carroll and wife Tiffany (Schrimpf) of Tewksbury, Crystalynn (Byrne) Smith and husband Ryan of Pelham,,NH, Stephen Byrne of Seattle, WA, Ryan Byrne and wife Jessica Cisowski of Pepperell, MA 11 great-grandchildren; a sister-in Law, Helen (Flood) Byrne of Lowell; many nieces and nephews.
Ed was also the brother of the late Thomas H. Byrne, USN, who was killed in action during WW II, the late Irene Baxter, and the late C. Emmett Byrne.
At his request there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass to be celebrated Tuesday morning at ST. MARGARET CHURCH in Lowell at 12 o’clockNoon.
