Donald J. “Fitzie” Fitzgerald
Proud veteran WWII, retired Correctional Officer;
Donald J. “Fitzie” Fitzgerald, 91, formerly of Chelmsford, died peacefully Tuesday evening at D’Youville Senior Care Center.
He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (McAndrews) Fitzgerald who died August 21, 2002.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, August 23, 1924, the son of the late James P. and the late Josephine M. (O’Donnell) Fitzgerald, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in 1942.
A veteran of World War II, Fitzie proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy where he was a radar man aboard the U.S.S. Charles Carroll. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a Correctional Officer at MCI - Concord for many years.
A member of the American Legion, A.S.C.M.E. and the Massachusetts Correctional Officers Association, Fitzie also enjoyed being a longtime member of St. Margaret’s Parish Bowling League. He was a communicant of St. Margaret Church and St. Patrick Church in Lowell.
Donald is survived by his sister Virginia R. Fitzgerald, R.N., of Lowell; two brothers Paul F. Fitzgerald and his wife Lydia of Edenburg, TX and Leonard D. Fitzgerald and his wife Shirley of Lowell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also the brother of the late Raymond J. Fitzgerald and the late Dorothy A. Hudzik.
Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 2 to 5 P.M. Sunday. His Funeral will take place from the Funeral Home Monday morning at 9 o’clock followed by his Funeral Mass at ST. MARGARET CHURCH at 10 o’clock. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery.
