Janice A. “Jan” MahoneyFounder of Pawtucketville Girls’ Softball League
Janice A. “Jan” (Pape) Mahoney, 77, died Wednesday, February 3rd with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard P. “Ratch” Mahoney who died May 16, 1981.
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, September 16, 1938, the daughter of the late John and the late Margaret (Pierce) Pape, she attended Fort Wayne schools and was a graduate of Northside High School. Before retiring in 2002, Jan was employed as a Housing Specialist with Community Teamwork in Lowell. For many years Jan was active in numerous political campaigns. She was active in the Democratic Party for over 28 years and was Chairman for Ward 6 for many of those years. She was selected as Secretary for the City Democratic Committee. A former Commissioner of the Board of Parks for the City of Lowell, she served from 1977 to 1982. Jan was also appointed to the Lowell Commission for Election Office where she served from 1997 to 2002. She was also a board member on the Council on Aging. Founder of the Pawtucketville Girls’ Softball League, the Jan Mahoney Girls Softball Field in Pawtucketville was named in her honor on April 24, 2005. Jan’s passion was watching her grandchildren play baseball and softball. In addition, she was absolutely obsessed with watching the NCAA March Madness but was a lover of all sports. She also enjoyed many hours of music and playing cards with the “Ladies” at “The Home”. Jan is survived by two daughters Laura Ann Corcoran and Jennifer Mahoney-Brum and her husband Joseph; three sons Patrick J. Mahoney and his wife Martha, Paul Mahoney and his wife Louise and Timothy S. Mahoney; six grandchildren Colleen Corcoran, Joseph Corcoran, Olivia Brum, Richard Mahoney, Shawn Mahoney and Kevin Mahoney; a great-grandson Mason Powell; her dear friend Charlene “Whoppie” Urbanek; many cousins in Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. She was also grandmother of the late Megan Corcoran and sister of the late Carolyn Harman. Her family would like to thank the entire nursing staff and caregivers of Palm Manor Nursing Home for the kind and compassionate care that they provided to Jan while she resided there. Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 Pawtucket ST. at Fletcher from 1 to 4 P.M. Sunday. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday morning at SAINT RITA CHURCH in Lowell at 11 o’clock.
