Joseph A. Wholey, Jr.

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather

Joseph A. Wholey, Jr., 95, of Lowell, died Monday afternoon, April 25th, at Lowell General Hospital with his loving family at his bedside.
He was the devoted husband and loving caregiver of the late Doris G. (McKeon) Wholey who died April 14, 2011. They were married for nearly 65 wonderful years.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, June 14, 1920, the son of the late Joseph A. and the late Rose E.(Cassidy) Wholey, Sr., Joe attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Keith Academy. He then went on to attend Lowell Technological Institute (now U Mass Lowell).
Joe was a lifelong communicant of the former St. Columba’s, now known as St. Rita’s Catholic Church, in Lowell and was a member of the Holy Name Society of his parish.
A veteran of World War II, Joe proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was stationed first at Bradley Field, Hartford, CT, and for most of the war, in Saipan, as a B-29 bomb loader. Sgt. Wholey was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation as well as other battle awards for his service.
Joe worked as a book binder and printer for over 35 years before he retired from Courier Citizen.  He was also a Life Member of the Lowell Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Among his many interests, Joe enjoyed spending time golfing, vacationing with his family, visiting his children and grandchildren in California, Utah and Virginia, among other locales. He especially loved Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays giving him the opportunity to make many memories with his great-grandchildren.
Joe is survived by a daughter Kathleen Loucks and her husband Michael of Woodbridge, VA; a son James J. Wholey of Lowell; a granddaughter Kimberly Loucks Mumpower, Esq. and her husband Claude of Bristol, VA; a grandson Christopher Loucks and his wife Tammy of Cleveland, OH; his two great granddaughters McKeon Mumpower and Lucy Loucks; his step-great-grandchildren Peyton and Parker Mumpower; and two nieces Sharon Wholey and Lynne Dailey and her husband Alan, all of Lowell.
He was also the brother of the late Leonard T. Wholey, and his wife, the late Joyce (King) Wholey and uncle of the late Leonard T. Wholey, Jr.
A special Thank You to Anne, Carol, Karen, Martha, and Shauna of Home Health VNA; Joe particularly enjoyed your visits. The family is deeply indebted to the professional dedication and loving care shown by the entire staff of the Lowell General Hospital’s Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU).
