Leo J. McCaffrey, 89, of Chelmsford, died Monday afternoon at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was the husband of the late Frances M. (Adams) McCaffrey who died April 19, 2004.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, May 28, 1927, Leo attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School.
Leo joined the Navy at a young age and proudly served his country during two wars, World War II and the Korean Conflict. Upon completion of two tours which saw him serve as a Naval Aviation Patrol Bomber with Air Squadron VPB127, he left the Navy as a First Class Petty Officer.
Upon returning from the War, Leo worked at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford for over 30 years as a Radar Systems Foreman in the Avionics Department. He later worked for BTU Systems in Billerica as an electrical engineer until his retirement.
Leo was a member of the VFW Walker Rogers Post 662 in Lowell and also the American Legion Post 366 in East Chelmsford.
He also enjoyed fishing on Lake Winnisquam and traveling along the seacoast of New England, especially Kennebunkport.
However, what brought him the most joy was the time he spent with family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. These were the moments he treasured the most.
Leo is survived by two daughters Pamela J. Zupkosky and her husband Larry M. of Westford and Sharon A. Ryan and her husband Richard T. Jr. of Chelmsford; six grandchildren Erica McNamara and her husband Brad of Fitchburg, Jennifer Petzke and her husband Christopher of South Bend, IN, Michael Zupkosky and his wife Melissa of Merrimack, NH, Kaitlin Couture and her husband Jonathan of Chelmsford, Daniel Ryan and his wife Lauren of Reading and Meghan Ryan of Chelmsford; five great grandchildren Kyleigh, Aiden, Olivia, Zachary and Jack.
Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday. Relatives and friend are invited to attend his Funeral Mass to be celebrated FRIDAY MORNING at ST.
