Helen J. Henry
Loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt
Helen J. (Harvey) Henry, 96, a member of a well-known Lowell family, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 20th at D’Youville Senior Care in Lowell. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard P. Henry to whom she was married for over 30 years, and with whom she ran a successful coffee distribution company, Courtesy Coffee of New England.
Helen was born in Charlestown, MA, May 8, 1920, to the late Harold and the late Margaret (McCarthy) Harvey, and she received her education in the Boston school system. She later moved with her family to West Roxbury.
After graduating from high school, she worked numerous jobs, but Helen’s favorite job was working at Sub Signal supporting the war effort. When the war ended, she was introduced to her future husband Richard (Dick) Henry by a mutual friend who had served with Dick in the Philippines. Helen and Dick were soon married and then moved to his hometown of Lowell where they raised three children.
Helen loved the outdoors. She skied and fished in the mountains with her family, and planned frequent outings to the beach in Rye, NH. Gardening was one of her great loves, and Helen was constantly transplanting flowers and saplings that she had found in her travels to her yard. “Don’t step there!” was her constant refrain to her children and their friends playing in the yard while she anxiously awaited her budding new plantings in the spring. In her later years, her greatest joy was the quality time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she let them step anywhere!
Mrs. Henry is survived by a daughter Joan M. Cassin and her husband James M. of Lowell; two sons Richard P. Henry, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Dunstable, MA and John T. Henry of Andover, MA (and was mother-in-law to his deceased wife Jean Verzola-Henry); five grandchildren Bethany C. Beckerlegge and her husband Robertson of Easton, CT, James M. Cassin, Jr. and his wife Brittany of Old Bridge, NJ, Erin DeSilva and her husband Jeremy of Norwich, VT, Michael Henry and his wife Ashley of Medway, MA, and Lorrie Cole and her husband Adam of Lowell; eight great-grandchildren Andrew, Margot, Corbin, Cooper, Benjamin, Josephine, Ian and Jameson; a beloved sister Theresa LeBlanc of Medway, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also predeceased by her siblings Mildred Ryan, Harold Harvey, Ethel Saulnier and Margaret Peterson.
Helen’s family would like to thank the staff of D’Youville Senior Care for the support, kindness and devotion shown to their mother during her stay there.
