Frederick L. “Fred” Simon,

 A dedicated husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend;

Frederick L. “Fred” Simon, 80, of Tewksbury, died Tuesday morning at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his devoted family.

He was the beloved husband of Elaine A. (Anasoulis) Simon, who survives him, and with whom he recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, December 10, 1936, to the late Charles and the late Mildred (Coudy) Simon he was proud of his Syrian heritage and was an active parishioner of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church. A man of great faith, he was also a founding member of the Council of Eastern Orthodox Parishes of Greater Lowell.

After attending grammar school in Lowell, he went on to graduate from Lowell High School in the Class of 1954.

Fred honorably served his country as a member of the U.S Army.

Prior to his retirement, Fred had a long and distinguished career in both the public and private sectors. He began as a salesperson and assistant manager with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; where he worked for over 24 years and then at Raytheon Corporation in the Andover facility for 11 years.

Fred then transitioned into public service as a Constituent Services Representative for State Senators John O’Brien and Steven Panagiotakos. He finished his career as the Community Work Program Coordinator at the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department.

Fred was a passionate leader in civic, charitable and religious causes throughout his life,  In fact, in his last public appearance, a month ago, he and his friends and family hosted a fundraiser for Dana Farber Cancer Institute helping those who could not afford all of the ancillary costs associated with cancer treatment. It was a significant financial success, garnering $40,000.00 for the Adult Patient Assistance Fund.

Fred was a well-known champion for those in need and affiliated with many organizations. He will be forever associated with the Salvation Army, through his many years as the honorary chairman of their annual Radiothon; where he along with the rest of the hard working committee members and donors, eased the burden of countless individuals and families.

A founding Co-Chair of the Tewksbury 9-11 Memorial, he was also a member of the Owl Diner Charities and the Highland Players.

For all his accomplishments, what endeared Fred to so many was his kindness, compassion, dedication and loyalty to others. He has left an indelible mark on the Greater Lowell community that will live on for years to come.

Besides his wife, Fred is survived by three daughters Millie Simon-Dufault and her husband Mark Dufault of Litchfield, NH, Julie Simon of Dracut and Maria Simon and her husband Lorne Keplar of Beverly; his four grandchildren Justin, Alexa and Austin Dufault and Lauren Simon; his godchildren Dean Brown and Julie Grillakis; and many nieces and nephews.
