Barbara V. (Merritt) Torpey, 85, died Sunday June 4, 2017, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington with her loving family by her side.

She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Torpey who died October 30, 2011.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, September 13, 1931, a daughter of the late William A. and the late Theresa V. (Brick) Merritt, she attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Keith Hall where she was Captain of the Cheer-leading Squad.

A member of the Red Hat Society, Barbara also held membership in the Keith Hall Alumnae Association, St. Margaret Sodality and was a former member of the East End Club. She was also a committee member for the Mustard Seed Project in Jamaica.

Barbara is survived by six daughters Colleen Alaoui of Lowell, Marian Cunningham and her husband Samuel of South Berwick, ME, Michele Teague of Lowell, Diane Torpey and Ron St. Jean of Seabrook, NH, Karin Guthrie and John Alder of Townsend, Kathleen Ballos and her husband Michael of Townsend; a son Thomas E. Torpey of Lowell; 22 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; a sister Margaret M. Loucraft of Lowell; a brother George W. Merritt of Wells, ME; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by four children Mary Torpey, Patrick Torpey, Suzanne Torpey and Bridget Torpey; two grandchildren Jonathan P. Pesa and Sarah R. Pesa Wale; her brother William Merritt and her son-in-law Daniel Teague.

Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass to be celebrated Wednesday morning at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH at 11 o’clock followed by burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.
