Frederick J. McSwiggin

 

 

Retired Lieutenant, with Lowell Fire Department over 38 years;

 

Frederick J. McSwiggin, 97, of Lowell, a retired Lowell FireFighter, and a member of a well known Greater Lowell family, died Monday January 1, 2018 at D’Youville Senior Care Center in Lowell surrounded by his loving family.

Fred was a devoted and doting husband of the late Dorothy C.(Boyle) McSwiggin who died in 2001.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, July 18, 1920, a son of the late Frederick J. and the late Abby (Dean) McSwiggin, he grew up on Concord Street in Lowell and later lived in the Centralville section of the city for many years. He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church.

Fred attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1938. As a star athlete in high school, Fred excelled in both baseball and football receiving many accolades for his achievements.

A veteran of World War II, Fred proudly represented his country in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate, 2nd Class and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal.

A man of many interests, Fred loved to be with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, and watching the local sport teams, especially the Red Sox.  He and Dorothy had many wonderful friends from Lowell and beyond. They treasured the summers they spent on Cape Cod, and wintering in Largo, Florida.

Fred, along with his late wife Dorothy, often demonstrated their passion and talent for ballroom dancing. For many years, they could be seen dancing most weekends through out the Greater Lowell area. Both also enjoyed their social membership at Mt. Pleasant.  Fred continued dancing with his daughter until his very last days.

Fred is survived by two daughters Janice A. McClain and her husband Lawrence of Rockaway, NJ and Jill M. Adie and her husband Donald, of Tyngsboro, MA, whom he lived with for several years. Frederick J. McSwiggin, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Plymouth, MA and John T. “Jack” McSwiggin and his wife Geraldine of Dracut, ; twelve grandchildren Amanda Pattison and her husband Adam, Kathleen Cochran and her fiancé Robert Volz, Laurie McSwiggin McInerney and her husband Stephen, Maureen McSwiggin, John T. McSwiggin, Jr. and his wife Kara, Kathryn Ventricelli and her husband Carl, Abbey McClain, Michael McClain, Alyssa Cyr and her husband Matt, Kirsta Adie, Donald M. Adie III and William F. Adie; 11 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Charles McSwiggin.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Fred's many caregivers and the staff at D'Youville Senior Care Center.

Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass to be celebrated Saturday morning at ST. MICHAEL CHURCH in Lowell at 10 o’clock followed by his burial at St. Patrick Cemetery.
