Helen (Valacellis) Letsou
Helen (Valacellis) Letsou, 89, formerly of Lowell but more recently from Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully at University Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday January 14, 2021.
She was the beloved wife of Dr. Vasilios G. Letsou for 49 years, until his death on January 16, 2005.
Born in Watertown, Massachusetts, March 25, 1931, the daughter of the late Cleanthis G. and the late Elpiniki (Stavrides) Valacellis, she attended Watertown schools and graduated from Watertown High School in 1949, the class salutatorian. Helen went on to graduate from Radcliffe College in 1953 with a B.A. degree in French.
Upon graduation, she worked at Dutton Publishing in Boston. Shortly after marrying in 1956, she and her husband moved to Lowell, where Helen resided until 2011.
A proud and devoted mother of three, Helen also served as an officer of the Lowell YWCA, participated in the community Garden Club, and supported children’s literacy at the Reilly School. She was an avid tennis player.
She is survived by a daughter Dr. Anthea Letsou and her husband Dr. James E. Metherall of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sons Dr. George V. Letsou and his wife Dr. Jane Carter of Houston, TX and Peter V. Letsou and his wife Felicity Harper Letsou of Memphis, TN; grandchildren Nicholas and Stephanie Metherall, Christopher, Philip and John Letsou, and William, Christina and Theodore Letsou. She is also survived by her sister Chrysanthe V. Thayer of Salt Lake City, Utah and her sister-in-law Athena G. Letsou of Lowell.
Helen was the sister of the late Alcmene V. Nichols.
Due to Covid 19 gathering restrictions, all Funeral Services were held privately for the family at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell and the Lowell Cemetery.
