Beloved Husband, Uncle and Godfather

George A. Bettencourt 72, of Newton NH, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, October 8th, after a long illness with his wife of 49 years, Ellen (Doherty) by his side.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on November 16, 1950, George was the son of the late George J. and the late Elizabeth (Dyer) Bettencourt.  George attended Lowell public schools and graduated from Lowell High School. He graduated from Essex Agricultural Institute and spent his career in the transportation industry.

Prior to his retirement he spent his career working for several companies including working with his father at his company, Chelmsford Fuel and Transportation, with his father-in-law at his company, Seton Leasing, and for Wells Fargo Corporation. George served in the U.S.Army National Guard, reaching the rank of Sargeant before his separation from service.

A great fan of New England sports, he will be remembered by friends and family for his love of the Red Sox, his knowledge of sports history, cars, and film history. He loved to travel, and George enjoyed many trips with Ellen throughout Europe and the Caribbean.  George suffered a stroke in 2017 and faced rehabilitation and many challenges in his remaining years with his characteristic courage, humor and determination.  Along the way he continued to make many friends and actively participated in many activities during his last years spent at All American Assisted Living in Kingston, N. H.

George is survived by his wife, Ellen, of Newton, N.H., his nieces Katie (LaBelle) Edwards and Alexandra Greenberg-Worisek, two nephews, Daniel J. Greenberg, and Troy Bettencourt, his sister-in-law, Jean Marie Doherty-Greenberg, his brother-in-law Robert P. LaBelle, a great nephew, Archer Edwards, and two great nieces, Josie and Samantha Worisek.

He was predeceased by his sister, Carole Thellen, and his sister-in-law Ann (Doherty) LaBelle.
