James J. Hughes
Beloved father, son, and brother.

James J. Hughes, 57, of Dracut, Massachusetts, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at Lowell General Hospital.

Born in Boston, MA, on December 30, 1966, the son of Joseph J. Hughes and the late Marilyn (Bitz) Hughes, Jim attended Boston Latin High School and graduated in 1985. He received a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Ripon College in Ripon, WI, in 1988 before getting his master’s in Material Sciences from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.

Jim worked for over 20 years as the principal research and development engineer at Beaver Visitec International; a company that manufactures ophthalmic equipment. A talented and gifted scientific engineer, he held seven medical patents that he created.   Jim enjoyed running, kayaking, hiking, archery, and being outdoors in general. He loved to cook, especially barbecuing in his smoker.  He took great pride in being a Certified Kansas City Barbeque Judge as well.

As a child and young adult, Jim was active in Boy Scouts where he first discovered his talent for cooking and love of outdoor activities. Camping came naturally to him and he was comfortable being out in the woods, no matter the conditions. He was well liked and he developed many close friendships that have endured even to this day. Jim was a natural leader, respected by the adults and looked up to by the younger boys. Many in the Troop considered him to be the big brother they always wanted.

Jim is survived by a son, Ryan J. Hughes of Dracut, MA; two daughters, Elizabeth R. Hughes and Catherine A. Hughes, both of Dracut, MA; his father, Joseph J. Hughes of West Roxbury, MA; three brothers, Michael Hughes and his wife Jane, Paul Hughes, and Mark Hughes, all of West Roxbury, MA; two sisters, Mary Hughes and Nancy Hughes, both of West Roxbury, MA; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Visitation on Wednesday morning January 8, 2024 at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. in LOWELL from 9:30 to 11:30 A.M. His Funeral Mass will follow at the  St. Marguerite D’Youville Church, Lakeview Ave, Dracut, MA at 12:00 NOON. (Please meet at church).
