Mary Karen Sullivan Devoted sister, aunt, and grand-aunt;
Mary “Karen” Sullivan, 76, passed away January 8, 2025, at D’Youville Senior Care in Lowell after an extended illness. Until late 2023, Karen had been a longtime resident of Marland Place in Andover and was a vibrant member of the assisted living community. As her health care needs increased, Karen moved to the D’Youville Life and Wellness Community in Lowell and was grateful and happy to be part of the caring community. Karen was born in Lowell September 19, 1948, daughter of the late James F. and Helen E. (Jones) Sullivan of Lowell and granddaughter of the late Helen (McCaughey) and Harold Jones, who originally hailed, respectively, from Northern Ireland and Bangor, Maine, and Margaret (Holland) and John Sullivan, who immigrated from County Cork, Ireland. She attended Lowell Catholic and public elementary and middle schools before attending Lowell High School. For many years, Karen worked in the environmental services department of St. John’s Hospital until her early retirement due to health challenges. Upon moving to Andover, Karen became a longtime volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital.
Karen grew up in the Highlands area of Lowell and was an active participant of St. Margaret’s parish. Upon moving to downtown Lowell, where she first resided at the Sun Building and then at Massachusetts Mills apartments, she became a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. Karen enjoyed travel, with fond memories of trips to Bermuda, California, Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Washington DC. In later years, she relished spending time at Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine. Throughout the years, she remained an avid Red Sox fan.
She is survived by her three brothers, Michael J. Sullivan and his wife Donna (Sweeney), of Lowell, Kevin W. Sullivan and his wife Gail (Pulaski) of Lowell, and Mark P. Sullivan and his spouse José Colón of Arlington, Virginia; three nephews and two nieces; eleven grand-nieces and nephews; and several first cousins and their families, including Gail (Connolly) Gauthier of Lowell. Karen loved doting on her nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews when they were young.
Karen’s siblings would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of D’Youville for the loving care and dedication to their sister.
