Avra Skrekas, a lifelong resident of Lowell, passed away peacefully at her home on January 22, 2025, at the age of 96.

Born in Lowell, MA on February 3, 1928, she was the cherished daughter of the late Charles and Demetra (Stavroulias) Kanavos.

Avra is survived by her beloved daughter, Georgia Skrekas, who devotedly cared for her in her later years. She was predeceased by her loving husband, George Skrekas, and her daughter, Deborah Victoria Skrekas.

A proud graduate of Lowell High School Class of 1945 and Bradshaw Business School, Avra pursued further education by taking business courses at Boston University.

She began her professional journey in the insurance industry at the young age of 18, under the mentorship of Mr. Charles Slowey in Lowell. Together with her husband, George, she later founded and ran Avra’s Insurance Agency in Lowell for over 50 successful years, leaving a legacy of service and dedication.

Avra was a devoted member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell and an active member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, embodying her deep commitment to faith and community.

Her passion for helping others extended far beyond her professional life. Avra previously served as president of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and was actively involved with the March of Dimes and the Reading Is Fundamental organizations. She also found great joy in working with children in the Lowell public schools, making a lasting impact on young lives.

Avra’s warm heart and generous spirit will be missed by her family, including her brother Nicholas Kanavos and his wife Joyce, her sister Florence Bagley and her husband John, and her sister-in-law Barbara Kanavos.  She also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever cherish her memory.

She was predeceased by her brothers Theodore Kanavos and his wife Jean, and John Kanavos.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Wednesday morning January 29, 2025, at the TRANSFIGURATION GREEEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 25 Fr. John Sarantos Way in Lowell from 10 to 11:00 A.M. followed by her Funeral Service in the Church at 11:00 o’clock. Her burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in No. Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Avra’s memory to the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Lowell, MA, honoring her lifelong devotion to her faith and community.
