H. Thomas Scanlon

Loving Father and Grampy

H. Thomas Scanlon, 81, died March 4 after a brief illness.

Born May 30, 1939 in Lowell, he resided in the city his entire life except when he was serving in the military. He was the son of the late Harold and the late Bertha (Stacy) Scanlon.

He attended Lowell Public Schools and Lowell High School. He enrolled in the U.S. Army in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1961 at the rank of SP15.

For many years he operated Riverside Sports in Lowell with his father-in-law, Owen Flynn. In his later years, he was in charge of security and maintenance at the Lowell Regional Transit Authority station in Lowell.

In his younger days, he played all levels of ASA softball when the sport enjoyed its glory days in the area. He became the Northeast Area commissioner for ASA Softball umpires. Blessed with a smooth, left-handed swing, he loved playing golf and was a member at Mt. Pleasant Golf Club and Long Meadow Golf Club. He spent many hours playing the card game 45s with his clubmates at Long Meadow. For years, he also hosted many of his former umpire friends and his son, Thomas, for Sunday night card games.

He enjoyed family gatherings at his house at Nabnasset Lake in Westford. He loved the time he got to spend at the lake. In 2016, he enjoyed the trip of a lifetime to California to play golf at historic Pebble Beach Golf Club with his sons, Thomas and Barry, and grandson, Patrick Scanlon.

At the time, he said, “I’ve lived a full life and enjoyed almost all of it.” The California trip was one of the highlights.

He was a devoted fan of Boston sports, especially the New England Patriots. He enjoyed frequent trips to Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, where he fondly remembered an exchange with his host.

“What are the hot machines?” he asked. To which his host jokingly replied, “The first machine you sit at will hit … eventually.”

He loved to build things using wood, becoming Home Depot’s best customer. And he was a big fan of comedy shows, often laughing before the comedian delivered a key punchline.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Geraldine Williams, as well as his former wife, Sheila Scanlon.

He is also survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws, Thomas and Anne Scanlon, of Lowell; and Barry and Misty Scanlon, of Chelmsford. His son-in-law Timothy Bradley of Stoneham.  He was proud of his nine grandchildren, Patrick, Ryan and Katie Scanlon; Daniel, Mikaela and Lauren Bradley; Meaghan (Scanlon) St. Jean, and Lyndsay and Erin Scanlon; and four great-grandchildren, Madison and Charlotte Scanlon; Arthur Allard; and Cormac Bradley.

He was also the uncle of Maureen (Kobisky) Franklin, David Kobisky, Edward Kobisky and Harold Kobisky. He was also the cousin of Henry and Alice Newell, , Dorothy McGuane, Carol Milackey, Dana Rodriques and Francine Rodriques.

He was the father of a deceased daughter, Susan (Scanlon) Bradley. He was also the brother of the late Betty Kobisky and Lucille Mandravelis and cousin the late Harry Newell.
